Created by: Chris Cox

Welcome to our guide on maintaining your fifth-wheel hitch. Whether you're a seasoned RV enthusiast or new to the world of towing, understanding, and implementing proper maintenance practices is key to ensuring a smooth and safe towing experience. In this post, we'll delve into seven top maintenance practices that will help you keep your fifth-wheel hitch in optimal condition for the long haul.

1. Understanding Your Fifth-Wheel Hitch

Before diving into maintenance procedures, it's crucial to have a basic understanding of your fifth-wheel hitch's components. This typically includes the hitch head, coupler (aka “Jaws”), and the mounting system body as shown in Figure 1. Familiarize yourself with your specific hitch model and refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance requirements tailored to your setup and its specific components.

2. Regular Inspection Routine

Routine inspections are the cornerstone of hitch maintenance. Start by visually inspecting all components, paying close attention to bolts, safety chains, and any electrical connections. Look for signs of wear, corrosion, cracks, or damage, and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure safety on the road. If you use your fifth-wheel frequently (aka full-time RVers), you may want to inspect your fifth-wheel monthly. If you’re more of a recreational user, an inspection every six months may be sufficient.

3. Lubrication and Greasing

Proper lubrication is essential for the smooth operation of your fifth-wheel hitch. Use the proper grease for moving parts like pivot points and ball bearings and consider using anti-seize compound on bolts to prevent corrosion and ease future maintenance tasks. Regularly apply lubricants by type and location according to the manufacturer's recommendations to prolong the life of your hitch. Note, when lubing the jaws of your hitch, if your unit has a spring tension jaw, do not put your hands or fingers in the coupler area when the jaw is under spring pressure.

4. Cleaning and Rust Prevention

Keeping your hitch clean and rust-free not only enhances its appearance but also extends its lifespan. Make sure to use a clean rag to clean hitch components. Tackle rust spots with dedicated rust removers, and apply a rust-inhibiting spray or paint to areas that have chipped or are rusting. This is very important if you frequently tow in harsh weather conditions or stay near the ocean. When cleaning polyurethane parts, make sure to use a cleaner that is polyurethane friendly. DO NOT use anything that is corrosive or has an acetone base as it will break these components down.

5. Adjustments and Alignment

Periodic adjustments and alignment checks are crucial for optimal hitch performance. Verify and adjust hitch height, angle, and tension as per your trailer's specifications. Proper alignment not only improves towing stability but also reduces wear on hitch components, ensuring longevity and reliability during your journeys.

6. Electrical System Maintenance

Don't overlook the importance of maintaining the electrical system related to your tow vehicle while maintaining your hitch. Inspect and test trailer brake wiring, connector sockets, and grounding to ensure everything functions correctly. Replace damaged wires or connectors promptly and keep the electrical system clean and free from debris for optimal performance.

7. Storage and Off-Season Care

Proper storage and off-season care are vital for preserving your fifth-wheel hitch when not in use. Invest in a quality hitch cover or storage bag to shield it from the elements. Conduct periodic checks and maintenance tasks even during storage to detect any issues early and ensure your hitch is ready for action when towing season resumes.

Conclusion:

By following these top fifth-wheel hitch maintenance practices, you'll not only prolong its lifespan but also enhance your towing experience with improved safety and reliability. Make maintenance a regular part of your RV care routine, and don't hesitate to seek professional assistance for complex tasks or if you're unsure about any maintenance procedures. Here's to smooth sailing and enjoyable travels with your fifth-wheel hitch!
